German Cockroach Identification
German cockroaches are light brown to tan and much smaller than the American cockroaches often called palmetto bugs. Adults measure about half an inch to five-eighths of an inch long.
Their most recognizable feature is a pair of dark, parallel stripes just behind the head. Young German cockroaches, called nymphs, are smaller and darker, with a lighter marking running lengthwise along the back.

Do German Cockroaches Fly?
Adult German cockroaches have wings, but they generally do not fly. When disturbed, they are much more likely to run quickly into a crack, cabinet, appliance, or other hiding place.
When Are German Cockroaches Most Active?
German cockroaches are active year-round. Because they live and reproduce indoors, their activity is not as dependent on the seasons as many outdoor cockroach species. In South Carolina homes and businesses, an established German cockroach infestation can remain active throughout the year.
Where German Cockroaches Hide in Homes
German cockroaches prefer warm, protected areas close to food and moisture. Kitchens are especially common problem areas, including around refrigerators, dishwashers, stoves, sinks, cabinets, and plumbing.
They can also be found in bathrooms, laundry areas, and other parts of a building that provide the conditions they need.
During the day, German cockroaches typically hide in cracks, crevices, cabinet seams, appliance areas, and other tight spaces. Most of their activity occurs at night.
How German Cockroach Infestations Start
German cockroaches are often carried into homes and businesses in boxes, bags, luggage, appliances, furniture, and other belongings. They are not typically outdoor cockroaches that simply wander into a home from the yard.
In apartments, condos, duplexes, townhomes, and other connected buildings, German cockroaches can also move between adjoining spaces through openings around plumbing and utilities.
That distinction can be particularly important in the Grand Strand, where condos, apartments, hotels, and other multi-unit properties are common.
A clean home can still develop a German cockroach infestation if the pests are brought inside. Keeping food stored properly and reducing crumbs, grease, spills, and excess moisture can make conditions less favorable, but sanitation alone may not eliminate an established population.
Signs of a German Cockroach Infestation
Signs that German cockroaches may be present include:
- Live, small tan cockroaches in kitchens, bathrooms, or around appliances
- Small, dark droppings in cabinets, drawers, and other areas where roaches hide
- Egg cases in or around protected hiding areas
- Shed skins
- A noticeable musty odor when infestations become large
- German cockroaches appearing during the daytime
Because German cockroaches normally spend daylight hours hidden, frequent daytime sightings can occur when populations are high or the insects have been disturbed.

German cockroaches also commonly hide around warm appliances. If you have spotted them around your range controls, learn more about why cockroaches show up in a stove clock.
Why German Cockroaches Are Hard to Get Rid Of
German cockroaches reproduce quickly. A female typically carries an egg case containing roughly 30 to 40 eggs and keeps it attached until shortly before the young hatch. Several generations can be present in an infestation at the same time.
Their small size also allows them to hide in cracks and other protected areas that are difficult to reach. Killing the cockroaches that are visible does not necessarily eliminate those hiding elsewhere.

Are German Cockroaches Harmful?
German cockroaches can contaminate food and food-preparation areas as they move through unsanitary locations and across household surfaces.
Their droppings, shed skins, and other materials can also contribute to indoor allergens and trigger allergic reactions or asthma symptoms in some people.
German Cockroach Control in the Pee Dee and Grand Strand
German cockroach infestations are different from finding an occasional large outdoor cockroach inside. Because German cockroaches live and reproduce indoors, an established population can continue to grow if it is not addressed.
